What Can't Go in a Dumpster in Broward County?
By Cesar Hurtado, owner · Published
Our dump trailers can't take appliances containing refrigerant, tires, batteries, paint and paint cans, propane tanks, ammunition or hazardous materials. If any of these are found in the load, it's returned to your job site and a $100 surcharge applies. Most of these items can go to the household hazardous waste drop-off at 2780 N. Powerline Road in Pompano Beach on Saturdays, if your city participates.
What items aren't allowed in your dumpsters?
These items are not accepted in any of our dump trailers:
- Appliances containing refrigerant (air conditioners, refrigerators, freezers)
- Tires and batteries
- Paint and paint cans
- Propane tanks
- Ammunition
- Hazardous materials
Everything in a dump trailer goes to a disposal or recycling facility, and those facilities restrict what they take. Broward County's own landfill, for example, takes bulk waste, yard trash and construction and demolition debris, but not household garbage, hazardous waste, biomedical waste, lead-acid batteries or used oil, according to Broward County Solid Waste and Recycling Services.
We also don't accept asbestos. If you suspect something in a renovation contains it, have it tested by a qualified professional before work starts. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection explains the rules for demolitions and renovations.
So what can go in the trailer?
Most of what a cleanout or remodel produces is fine. Common loads include:
- Furniture, mattresses and box springs
- Bagged or boxed household items, cardboard and moving boxes
- Carpet and flooring materials
- Drywall, scrap wood, cabinets and fixtures
- Debris from small demolition or renovation work
- Yard debris and outdoor clutter
- Old tools and garage clutter
Heavy material like concrete, dirt, tile and pavers can go too, but it adds weight quickly. Each rental includes 1 ton, and clean fill trailers are available upon request. See our guide to dumpster weight limits and overage fees before you load it.
What happens if a prohibited item ends up in the load?
If any of these materials are found in the trailer, the load is returned to your job site and a $100 surcharge applies. You then have to pull the item out before the load can go.
A few habits prevent it:
- Set prohibited items aside in one spot before anyone starts loading.
- On a cleanout, check garages, sheds and closets for old paint, propane cylinders and car batteries first.
- If a contractor, family member or tenant is helping load, show them this list.
- Don't let neighbors or passersby add to your trailer. Anything they toss in counts as part of your load.
- When you're unsure about an item, text a photo to (954) 247-1399 before it goes in.
Where can I take paint, propane, tires and other hazardous waste in Broward County?
Broward County runs a household hazardous waste drop-off at 2780 N. Powerline Road, Pompano Beach, open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cities including Lighthouse Point and Oakland Park send their residents there. Lighthouse Point says there's no charge for its residents, you can stay in your vehicle while staff help with your items, and you need your driver's license or other proof of residency.
Accepted items listed by those cities include:
- Paint (oil and latex), paint thinners, wood stain and strippers
- Propane tanks
- Auto, boat and rechargeable batteries
- Motor oil, oil filters, gasoline, antifreeze and other auto fluids
- Pool chemicals, pesticides, fertilizers and weed killer
- Fire extinguishers, flares and fluorescent bulbs
- Household cleaners, solvents and aerosol products
Lighthouse Point lists a limit of five gallons per container and 25 gallons per visit. Not accepted there: business- and government-generated waste, explosives, biohazardous waste, appliances and microwave ovens.
Old tires
Tires go to the same household hazardous waste drop-off. Lighthouse Point lists a maximum of 5 tires per load with rims less than 25 inches in diameter. Oakland Park's January 2026 drop-off sheet notes that its Public Works department no longer accepts tires and sends residents to the household hazardous waste site.
Hours, accepted items and which cities participate can change. Check your own city's solid waste page, or call Broward County at 311, before you load the car.
What about refrigerators, freezers and AC units?
Appliances with refrigerant can't go in a dump trailer, and the household hazardous waste site doesn't take appliances either. You have two options:
- Have us haul it as junk removal. Refrigerator and appliance removal is one of our junk removal services, priced separately from the trailer rental, with jobs starting at $350. Text a photo for a quote.
- Drop it off yourself. Oakland Park's drop-off sheet lists a Broward County bulk waste drop-off at the same 2780 N. Powerline Road address, Saturdays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., that accepts bulk waste including furniture, appliances and yard waste.
Can electronics and batteries go in the trailer?
Batteries can't. Keep every kind out of the trailer. Lighthouse Point notes that rechargeable batteries, the kind in phones, laptops and power tools, are illegal to put in regular trash, and points residents to the household hazardous waste site or Call2Recycle drop-off locations.
Electronics aren't on our prohibited list. If you'd rather recycle them, Lighthouse Point lists computers, monitors, TVs, printers, phones, routers, cables and similar items as accepted at the same county drop-off. Check with your city that you're eligible.
What if the waste comes from a business?
The county drop-off is for households. Lighthouse Point's page says small businesses (including home-based ones), government agencies and nonprofits that generate hazardous waste or electronics should not bring it to any Broward County facility, and lists 954-765-4999 or 954-357-8850 for information. Contractors should plan for paint, solvents and other job-site chemicals before the dumpster arrives, and make sure everyone on the crew knows what stays out of the trailer. A returned load costs a $100 surcharge and a lost afternoon on the job.
