Dump Trailer vs. Roll-Off Dumpster: Which Should You Rent?

By Cesar Hurtado, owner · Published

Both hold your debris until it's hauled away; the difference is the equipment. A dump trailer is towed in behind a pickup, sits on its own wheels and has 4 to 5 foot walls, while a roll-off is a container that a roll-off truck sets down on the ground. Our dump trailers come in 15, 18, 21 and 24 yard sizes, each a flat rate that includes 7 days and 1 ton.

What's the difference between a dump trailer and a roll-off dumpster?

A roll-off dumpster is an open-top container. Roll-offs are commonly sold as 10, 20, 30 and 40 yard containers, and a roll-off truck drops the container at your property and picks it up when you're done.

A dump trailer is an open-top box built on a trailer. We tow ours in behind a pickup truck, unhitch it where you want it, and come back to haul it away. Ours come in 15, 18, 21 and 24 yard sizes. When people in South Florida search for a "dumpster rental," either one can show up, so it helps to know which you're getting.

How much driveway space does each one take?

Our trailer boxes measure 14 feet long for the 15 and 18 yard and 16 feet long for the 21 and 24 yard, and 7 to 8 feet wide. The hitch end adds length beyond the box, so leave extra room in front of it, and keep the path from the street clear on delivery day.

TrailerBox lengthBox width
15 yard14 ft7 ft
18 yard14 ft7 ft
21 yard16 ft7 ft
24 yard16 ft8 ft

Our trailers are driveway-safe and placed carefully to avoid damage. A repeat customer in Parkland kept an 18-yard trailer on their paver driveway for a 7-day carpet removal. If you have concerns about placement, tell us before delivery. For roll-offs, ask the provider for the container's footprint and how it's set down on your surface.

If you live in an HOA community, check its rules on where and how long a dumpster can sit. Our guide to driveway-safe dumpsters, pavers and HOAs covers what to ask.

Which one is easier to load?

Loading height is the wall you lift everything over. Our 15 yard trailer has 4-foot walls, and the 18, 21 and 24 yard have 5-foot walls. That's the box height; the trailer sits on its wheels, so check the actual lift from the ground before you plan how to load heavy pieces.

In general, a few habits make any open-top container easier to fill:

  • Put the heaviest, flattest items in first and spread them across the floor.
  • Break down furniture and boxes so they lie flat.
  • Fill gaps with bags and smaller items as you go instead of saving them for last.
  • Keep the load level with or below the top of the walls.

If lift height matters for your crew, ask a roll-off provider for the container's wall height before you book.

How is each one hauled away?

A roll-off truck pulls the container back onto the truck and hauls it. A dump trailer gets hitched back to the truck and towed. For you, the practical differences are in scheduling:

  • Dump & Return: when your trailer is full, we haul it and bring it back empty. It's charged as a new rental at the full flat rate for your trailer size.
  • Trailer swaps on active jobs: early on a Saturday, we swapped out a trailer for a client working at a Best Buy store in Sawgrass, Sunrise.
  • Multiple loads: for a contractor's oceanfront project in Coral Gables, we hauled multiple dumpster loads of clean fill concrete.
  • Longer jobs: a national demolition contractor rented a 21-yard trailer from us for 14 days for work at a Best Buy store in Boca Raton.

Contractors who need repeat hauls can see how this works on our contractor dumpster page.

How do the rental terms compare?

Here's exactly what a dump trailer rental from us includes:

TermOur dump trailers
PriceFlat rate: $350 (15 yd), $395 (18 yd), $440 (21 yd), $485 (24 yd)
Days included7 days
Weight included1 ton
Extra days$50 per day beginning on the 8th day after delivery
Weight over the included ton$120 per ton
Dump & ReturnCharged as a new rental at the full flat rate for your size
Not acceptedRefrigerant appliances, tires and batteries, paint, propane tanks, ammunition, hazardous materials

Roll-off terms vary by company. When you compare, ask every provider the same questions: how many days are included, how much weight is included, what each extra day and each extra ton costs, and what happens if a prohibited item is found in the load. A low base price with little included weight can cost more in the end.

What should I have ready on delivery day?

A little preparation makes the drop-off quick, whichever kind of container you rent. In general:

  • Decide exactly where you want it, and send us a photo of the spot so we can confirm it fits.
  • Move cars, trash carts and anything else out of the path from the street.
  • Watch for low branches, wires and tight turns along the way in.
  • If you're in a gated community, share the gate code or let the gate know we're coming.
  • If you'd like the trailer back at a certain time, or swapped while your crew is still working, tell us when you book.

Placement matters for loading too. Put the trailer as close to the work as you safely can, with the open end easy to reach, so your crew isn't carrying debris across the yard all week.

Which one should I rent?

In general, a dump trailer is a good fit for home cleanouts, move-in and move-out cleanups, renovation debris, yard waste and contractor jobs that need quick swaps. If your project needs more than 24 yards of space at once, a large roll-off may be the simpler choice, or you can plan a second load with us.

FAQ

Quick answers

Is a dump trailer the same as a dumpster?

It does the same job. A dump trailer is an open-top box on a trailer that we tow in and haul away, while a roll-off dumpster is a container set down by a roll-off truck. Both hold your debris until it's hauled to disposal.

Will a dump trailer damage my paver driveway?

Our dump trailers are driveway-safe and placed carefully to avoid damage, and customers keep them on paver driveways. If you have concerns about placement, tell us before delivery.

How long can I keep a dump trailer?

Every rental includes 7 days. If you need more time, $50 per day starts on the 8th day after delivery.

Can you swap a full trailer for an empty one?

Yes. A Dump & Return hauls the full trailer and brings it back empty. It's charged as a new rental at the full flat rate for your trailer size.

What sizes do your dump trailers come in?

15 yard ($350), 18 yard ($395), 21 yard ($440) and 24 yard ($485). Each is a flat rate that includes 7 days and 1 ton.
