Fort Lauderdale, incorporated in 1911 and now the Broward County seat, saw its first major development in the 1920s Florida land boom and grew fast again after World War II; a 1967 report estimated the city was already about 85% developed. Since 2002, downtown, especially around Las Olas Boulevard, has been rebuilt with new hotels and high-rise condominiums.
The city has about 165 miles of inland waterways, the reason it is nicknamed the Venice of America, plus about 7 miles of beach. More than 60 neighborhoods are officially recognized, and since 2000 the city has added about 18,000 residents by annexing seven formerly unincorporated neighborhoods. Its northwestern section is separate from the rest of the city, linked only by the Cypress Creek Canal under I-95.
