Plantation was Everglades wetland until Frederick C. Peters began developing it in the 1940s. The first homes went up in 1947 and were sold on single-acre lots, each with a two-bedroom house and a small fruit orchard, advertised as "A Full Acre with Every Home." The city incorporated on April 23, 1953.
In 1964 Gulfstream Land Development bought 5,400 acres from the Peters family to build the Jacaranda community. Plantation Acres, annexed in 1973, is designated a Special Public Interest Rural District to protect its natural landscape. The 2020 census counted 38,596 housing units.
