Sunrise started as Sunrise Golf Village, a 2,650-acre purchase by developer Norman Johnson in 1960. By 1967 the village had roughly 4,300 residents on 1.75 square miles, and it took the name Sunrise by referendum in 1971. The real growth came in the 1970s as Broward County pushed west, and by October 1984 the population was estimated at 50,000.
Annexation stretched the city past 18 square miles, out to the Everglades and south of I-595, and about a tenth of that area is water. The 2020 census counted 40,490 housing units for a population of 97,335, more than twenty times the 1967 head count.
