How it works

How a deck and patio removal job runs

  1. Step 1

    Photos

Text photos of the deck or patio, underneath if you can, and the path to the street.

  2. Step 2

    Quote

We confirm whether posts, footings and the base come out and what stays.

  3. Step 3

    Tear-out

Boards, railings and framing come up, or pavers and slabs are broken out and lifted.

  4. Step 4

    Haul-off and cleanup

Debris is hauled away, clean fill kept separate where possible, and the yard is picked up.

What gets removed in a deck or patio tear-out?

For a deck, everything above ground is the usual scope: decking boards, railings, stairs, joists and beams. Posts and footings can come out too if you're not building on them again — tell us what's next for the space.

For a patio, it depends on what it's made of:

  • Pavers are lifted and can often be kept clean as fill, along with the sand base if you want it gone.
  • Concrete slabs are broken up and removed. Clean concrete can often be kept separate as clean fill.
  • Tile over concrete comes up with the slab or on its own, depending on your plans.

Covered patios, pergolas and screen enclosures attached to the house are a bigger conversation. Send photos and we'll talk through what comes down and what needs to stay protected.

Before the tear-out, it helps to know what is going in next. A new deck builder may want the old footings left or removed; a paver installer usually wants the old base cleared down to the grade they plan to work from.

Why does the material change how a deck or patio job goes?

Weight. A wood deck makes a big pile, but it's light for its size. Concrete and pavers are the opposite: a small pile is heavy.

The U.S. EPA's volume-to-weight conversion factors list clean dimensional lumber at about 169 pounds per cubic yard and concrete at about 860 pounds per cubic yard. In other words, a cubic yard of broken concrete weighs roughly five times what a cubic yard of deck lumber does.

That matters if you're renting a dump trailer: each rental includes 1 ton, and weight over that is $120 per ton. It also matters for disposal, which is why keeping clean concrete and pavers separate from wood and other debris is worth it. Clean fill trailers are available upon request.

If your project has both, plan the order: wood and other debris in one load, clean concrete and pavers in another. Mixing them means the whole load is treated as mixed debris.

Dumpster sizes

Trailer sizes that fit this debris

Wood and composite decks are bulky but fairly light, so an 18 or 21 yard trailer fits most. Pavers and concrete patios are the opposite — heavy for their size — so each rental's 1 ton goes quickly, with $120 per ton over that; ask about a clean fill trailer for those.
