How it works

How a pool deck and concrete removal job runs

  1. Step 1

    Photos or walkthrough

Send photos of the deck or slab, its edges and the access to it. Larger areas may need a walkthrough.

  2. Step 2

    Quote

We confirm the area, what stays (coping, pool shell, equipment pad), and how clean fill will be handled.

  3. Step 3

    Break-out

Concrete, pavers or tile are broken out and lifted, with the areas that stay protected.

  4. Step 4

    Separate and haul

Clean concrete, pavers and tile are kept separate as clean fill where possible, and the rest goes as mixed debris.

  5. Step 5

    Cleanup

The area is cleared and left ready for your new deck, pavers or landscaping.

What is clean fill, and why keep concrete separate?

Clean fill is concrete, pavers, tile, brick and similar materials with nothing else mixed in — no wood, trash, metal or plastic. Kept clean, it can be handled separately from mixed construction debris instead of being thrown in with everything else.

That's why the order of work matters on a pool deck or concrete job. If the concrete comes out first and goes into its own load, it stays clean. If it's mixed with lumber, roots, old furniture or trash, the whole load becomes mixed debris.

Clean fill trailers are available upon request. If you're breaking out concrete yourself, ask for one and keep it to concrete, pavers and tile only. If you have both clean concrete and other debris, plan for two loads rather than one mixed one.

What counts as clean fill can depend on where it's going. Tell us what's in the load before you fill it, and we'll tell you whether it can go as clean fill.

How heavy is a pool deck or concrete job?

Heavier than most people expect. The U.S. EPA's volume-to-weight conversion factors list concrete at about 860 pounds per cubic yard and dirt and sand at about 929 pounds per cubic yard. Those are averages; solid chunks and wet soil weigh more. Either way, a couple of cubic yards of broken concrete or dirt can use up a ton.

So with concrete, weight runs out long before space does. That's why we usually point people to a smaller trailer for heavy material, and why the weight terms matter:

  • Each dump trailer rental includes 1 ton.
  • Weight over that is charged at $120 per ton.
  • Rentals include 7 days, with $50 per day after that.

If you'd rather not manage weight at all, have us do the break-out and haul-off as a demolition job. Send photos of the area and its access and we'll quote it.

Breaking concrete into smaller pieces also makes loading easier and lets it sit flatter in the trailer, but it does not change the weight.

What should you know before removing a pool deck?

A pool deck sits right next to things you want to keep: the pool shell, coping, tile line, equipment and plumbing. Before work starts, agree on exactly where the removal stops.

  • Shut off and have the appropriate party disconnect pool lighting, pumps and any electrical or gas lines near the deck.
  • Mark irrigation, drains and buried lines you know about.
  • Decide whether the coping stays or goes, since it changes the scope.
  • Check with your city's building department about permits, especially if the pool or its barrier is affected.

It also helps to know what is going in next. If you are installing pavers or a new concrete deck, your installer may want the old base left at a certain level or cleared further. Agreeing on that before the break-out saves a second trip.

Send photos of the whole deck, the coping, the equipment pad and the access from the street, and we will quote the job with the stopping points spelled out.

Dumpster sizes

Trailer sizes that fit this debris

Concrete, pavers and tile are heavy long before a trailer looks full, so a smaller 15 or 18 yard trailer is usually the right call. Each rental includes 1 ton and $120 per ton over that; ask about a clean fill trailer for clean concrete and pavers.

FAQ

Pool Deck and Concrete Removal questions

Can concrete from a pool deck go as clean fill?

Often, yes, as long as it's kept clean — just concrete, pavers or tile with no wood, trash or other debris mixed in. Clean fill trailers are available upon request.

How much does a cubic yard of concrete weigh?

The U.S. EPA's volume-to-weight conversion factors list concrete at about 860 pounds per cubic yard. That's why concrete jobs reach the 1 ton included with a dump trailer rental quickly.

Do you protect the pool during deck removal?

Yes. We agree on where the removal stops before starting, and protect the pool, coping and anything else that stays.

What size dump trailer should I rent for concrete?

Usually a smaller one, like the 15 yard ($350) or 18 yard ($395), because concrete gets heavy before a trailer is full. Weight over the included 1 ton is $120 per ton.

Do I need a permit to remove a pool deck?

It depends on your city and the project, so check with your city's building department before work starts.
